Federal stimulus money has created or retained the equivalent of 8000 full-time jobs so far in Oregon. That's according to a report released today (Monday) by the office of Governor Ted Kulongoski. The actual number of people who got work was higher. But many of the jobs were part-time or temporary. Kulongoski and other state officials praised the jobs figure at a press conference in Portland.
Todd Baker of Baker Rock Resources said stimulus money prevented some layoffs at his Beaverton-based road construction company this year. “It's our hope that these stimulus investments are actually just the beginning to a statewide reinvestment in our transportation infrastructure. By keeping our people working and helping to maintain our local economy, we can continue to enjoy the benefits that only a good job can provide.”
The federal government has pumped more than a billion dollars in stimulus money into Oregon's economy so far. Much of that is going toward public assistance programs and state services like schools.
