Mary Hawkins, a native of Coeur d'Alene, began her radio career at Spokane Public Radio in 1980. She programmed and announced classical music programs, produced cultural features, and championed many genres of music and art. In the early 90s, Mary joined Northern Lights Public Radio in Grand Forks, North Dakota, where she led the programming of a three station service, including classical music, news and information, and contemporary folk music. She stayed in the Midwest to work at Public Radio International in Minneapolis.
At PRI, Mary acted as On-Air Promotion and Fundraising Manager, assisting national productions including A Prairie Home Companion, Marketplace and The World. She spearheaded national promotion and fundraising campaigns, gleaning thousands of listeners for her client stations and program producers.
In the late 90s, Mary moved to Boston to act as Director of Audience Building for Public Interactive, where she helped tailor web product for the public radio audience.
As Program Director for Northwest Public Radio, Mary Hawkins supervised the programming and operations for that statewide network of two program services; NPR news and NPR/classical music. She also produced and hosted The Saturday Show, a popular three-hour rhythm and blues show which aired from 2002 through the spring of 2008.
Mary is now working on multi-media content for the websites of NWPR and KTNW/KWSU and developing an internship and mentoring program with the Edward R. Murrow School of Communication.
